Are your Herald-Leaders being delivered?

At this time all orders for NIE Herald-Leader newspapers have been processed and you should be receiving your newspapers. If you are NOT receiving your NIE newspapers, or you feel you are not receiving the correct amount please contact Jennifer immediately.

Please note - some schools have multiple teachers ordering NIE newspapers but we have no way to mark the Herald-Leaders with individual teachers names so it is up to your schools to sort which newspapers go to which classroom. Some schools assign a special class or students to help first thing in the morning with the daily distribution. Please be sure to notify the person at your school bringing in the newspapers or the students distributing, them about your order. (If you'd like a list of teacher names and their orders please contact Jennifer.)

When reporting any NIE Herald-Leader shortages, 800-273-7355 ext. 3540, first check to how many newspapers were actually received. This information will help us to fix your problems in a timely fashion. If it's just one or two missing check and see if someone is randomly taking a newspaper as they walk by.

Thanks for all your e-mails and phone calls telling us how much you and your students are enjoying the new Newspaper in Education curriculum this fall.

The "Tails from the Bluegrass II" story is a big hit and students are loving putting each chapter in their own scrapbook. (find each chapter in the Tues. Health & Family Section)

The U.S. Constitution Civic Literacy page in the Sept. 15 Herald-Leader really fit the bill to help teachers teach on Constitution Day. Watch for more of these Civic Literacy pages periodically. Remember Bill of Rights Day is in December.

Over 50 teachers signed up for classroom sets of the Sunday Herald-Leaders and received the free First Amendment curriculum. If you're using the Sunday Herald-Leader don't forget to find the PARADE Magazine free curriculum link at www.nieconnects.com.

USE the Herald-Leader. Learning enhancement activity.
Ask students to name one community activity they have participated in during the past year to make their community a better place. ie. Raising money for school or club events. As a class make a graph or chart listing these activities. Have students look through the newspaper for ways others are helping their community. Cut out the articles and put on the wall or bulletin board. Add new ideas to the chart. Ask individuals to write a newspaper style article about their experiences and ways they might do more in the future. When finished, send the Herald-Leader home with students so they can share them with their families.

YOUR NIE SPONSOR!
This month we will begin matching up NIE classrooms with their NIE business sponsor (the business that is paying for your NIE newspapers.) You will be notified in writing with the name and address of your classroom sponsor.

YOUR SPONSOR LOVES TO HEAR FROM YOU!
As part of this NIE program, please be sure you and your students send your sponsor a 'Thank You' and other correspondence at regular intervals throughout the year. Use our convenient form online. It really makes them smile.

NEED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?
Not sure how to integrate the NIE newspapers into your curriculum or need a refresher course? We are happy to schedule a PD workshop at your school for 15 or more participants. Workshops can be 2-3 hours and are hands-on. Contact Kriss Johnson for more information.

Newspapers used by a trained teacher in the classroom have been shown to improve standardized test scores 3-10%.

NIE REMINDER:
Please remember NIE newspapers are for students use in the classroom and then can be sent home. If you find that newspapers are only being handed out, one per teacher, or just set in the teachers' lounge, oops, that is not the intention of NIE sponsored newspapers and a violation of the Audit Bureau of Circulation's NIE rules.
