50 WAYS TO USE LHL
THANK YOUR SPONSOR

Thanks for all you do for the “Newspapers In the Schools” – I have been using your papers and wonderful “News and Views” in my classroom and gym (Health and PE) for many years. Everyday there’s something I can turn into a “lesson plan”. “KUDOS” for you and all that you do!

As a teacher in the 4th and 5th grades Gifted/Talented program (QUEST) at Glendover Elementary in Lexington, I want to tell you how much my students enjoy and have appreciated having the newspaper in our classes this year. This is a great service you all do to link our academic and community together.

However, I want to make one more observation. For me personally, the help given to me by one of your staff members has been invaluable. Her name is Jennifer Royse.

From day one when I called to see about getting the papers delivered to my class, she impressed me with her pleasant, helpful demeanor and professionalism. It is obvious she knows her job quite well. In addition, she sent me extra materials she pulled off of the internet to use specifically for G/T students, and I have used them many times this year.

My students are also enjoying the HOOPS! unit even though some of their enthusiasm waned after UK was eliminated.... One day they were so into it that I called Jennifer Royse at her office to tell her and let her hear the exuberance for herself. She said she knew her father was in the area at that time and could he stop by and take pictures. He did and she has them in her office. That was really going above and beyond and I was very pleased all of this took place, and that someone cared enough to make a child’s day at school a little more special.

I am looking forward to continuing this service next year and to more interaction with your staff. BTW, the way I had knowledge of this program in the first place was through talking with Jennifer Royse at our August Back-to-School rally in Heritage Hall. She was manning the booth, and she was most outgoing and helpful, even though she had a huge number of people stopping to see about NIE.

Kudos to all of you and especially to Jennifer!

Ms. Royse,

I just wanted to write and thank you again for all your support in the Lexington Herald-Leader’s Newspaper in Education program again this year. My students have really benefited from utilizing the papers in our classroom here at E. J. Hayes.

Thanks again,

Bonnie Michaels

I can assure you that our papers are being used for students in our school. For instance, many of the classrooms are reading Tails from the Bluegrass II and in my classroom we just completed a project on the Bill of Rights in which my students read the papers daily for examples of each Amendment being put into practice in their community, state and/or nation. We regularly have homework and in class assignments as well. In math, we have used the newspapers extensively during our unit on decimals to help my students see the real-life application of skills/concepts we address here at school. The papers also provide reading materials for poverished families in my classroom who otherwise would not have reading material in their homes which initiates family discussions and activities.

Many teachers are using the newspapers in their classrooms in my school, some are per my recommendation of what NIE can offer their students and families and my testimony of what NIE has done for my students and how it has enhanced instruction over the years. (This is even more important than ever as the new Kentucky Core Content for Assessment is pushing real-life application in all subject areas. ) I know this to be true for at least three classrooms in my building who are receiving the newspapers (accounting for the use of 64 of our newspapers first hand).

Respectfully,

Susan R. Coffey

You are officially my hero! This is incredibly helpful - it has been so time consuming in the past to try and find (or remember) where the schools are located.

I love college hoops SO much and have been thrilled to have this curriculum to provide a valid excuse for talking about it on a daily basis! The kids really get into it and it makes the long, drawn out days of March a little less monotonous!

Thanks so much!

Dear Jennifer,

Enclosed are my students' advertisements honoring LG&E for donating our free newspapers. No day ever begins in my classroom without prompting a discussion of world affairs–the importance of learning about culture and politics allows my students to see themselves living life more globally.

Because I am a teacher of French, I asked my students to design ads with a French accent. Louisville is a city named after the last French king, Louis XVI–so I thought it fitting. Please enjoy.

We'll be looking forward to participating in any future projects and we have so enjoyed using the newspaper each and everyday!

Merci mille fois,
Tonya Wagoner
Teacher of French and Reading

Dear Ms. Royse,

I would like to thank you for the opportunity of having the Lexington Herald-Leader as a part of our school day. The educational opportunities that are provided through the paper are awesome. The students can't wait to see them each morning to check the weather, sports information, and other current events that affect their lives. It is amazing the difference I have seen in their reading ability, and their interest in reading informational sources rather than just library books.

We truly appreciate our sponsor, and we have written a letter to him as well. The students enjoyed designing their ads, and some have been very creative. They are anxious to see the results.

Again, we just want to extend a very heart felt thank you for your hard work, and for providing us with this opportunity.

Sincerely,
Brenda Coyle

I want to take the time to thank you and our sponsor Barney Miller for the wonderful service in providing my students newspapers this year.

I just wanted to let you know that the students who participated in this really enjoyed it. This is a great way to thank WKYT-TV for sponsoring our newspapers.

Thank you,

My students very much enjoyed this activity and we are extremely grateful to Somerset Oil, Inc. and the Lexington Herald-Leader for their continued support.

It's my greatest hopes that the ads were satisfactorily completed. This was a very worthwhile and productive activity. It connected beautifully with the persuasive reading strand that I was already teaching.

Thanks for allowing my students the opportunity to give back a "little something" to Somerset Oil, Inc. and the Lexington Herald-Leader for all they have done for our school and classroom!

Sincerely,
Diana Beckner

Thank you so much for the opportunity to say to Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance how much my students and I appreciate their sponsorship of our Tuesday and Thursday Herald-Leaders.

So many of our preference area students do not get a newspaper at home. This is the only one they see. I'm always happy to send our copies home at the end of the day.

Thank you for coordinating this "Design an Ad." I hope I have a winner among the ones we've submitted!

Sincerely,

My students and I would like to thank you for your support. We appreciate your sponsorship and providing us with the Lexington Herald newspapers. We use the newspapers daily for a variety of learning activities in Reading, Social Studies, Civics, Careers and even Mathematics.

Unfortunately due to "cut backs", public education suffers without private sponsors. As an educator, I admire people like you and your company, and for your interest in providing students with materials to learn. The majority of my students are from low-income homes. At risk-student's home normally do not have the benefit or the luxury of a daily newspaper.

After using the newspapers in the classroom, I give students the option to take the papers home. The newspapers provide students' home the opportunity to be knowledgeable about up-to-date events in the state and in the country, provide the home with reading materials, and may prompt parents and students to discuss and interact.

Again, I truly appreciate your dedication and contribution to students and education. Enclosed you will find a separate sheet with signatures of students who would like to express their appreciation too.

Sincerely,
Debbi Greene Owens

On behalf of the 7th Grade Class at Christ the King Middle School, I would like to thank you for sponsoring our class for a daily Lexington Herald newspaper. We have to admit that the first thing that gets read is the Sports Section (most of the boys in our class are participating in local sports, and, of course, they enjoy following regional, state and national sports). After that, we move to the more serious parts of the paper such as the major stories of the day and the events that are taking place in the local area. We also followed with great interest the reporting on the recent presidential election.

Having the newspaper available to us early in the morning has been a valuable experience, and we appreciate it very much. We have posted a sign in our homeroom noting that your store has sponsored our newspaper, and if you would like to send us a business card to attach to the sign, we would be glad to have it.

Sincerely,
Cathy W. Nohe and the members of the 7th Grade
Christ the King School, Lexington
